Peanut Butter Doggie Treats

It was Odin's birthday yesterday, and to celebrate we decided to try out a homemade dog biscuit recipe. Here it is:

1 cup water
2 Tbsp oil
1/2 cup natural peanut butter
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

I don't know that it would hurt to have all whole wheat flour since they don't rise or anything. I'm sure other flours could be used as well, like spelt or kamut. Could some dogs have a wheat gluten intolerance?


A note on olive oil: I use olive oil for everything. I usually replace butter and margarine for olive oil in most recipes. Generally it all works out fine. Hydrogenated fats and trans fats should be avoided, and saturated fats should be used in moderation. (I've recently read a study about saturated fats getting a bad rap, but have more research to do on that before I post about it, or change what I use.) I like to buy olive oil in the 3L cans when they are on sale. I fill a pump spray bottle, and a old Tabasco bottle with oil for easier use. The refillable type of pump spray bottles are nicer than buying cooking sprays. Cooking sprays tend to create a gooey build up on pans, plus the thought of iso-butane propellant mingling with my food is unsettling
.

Preheat the oven to 350F. Combine water, oil and peanut butter in a mixing bowl. Stir in flour. Knead to make a firm dough. Mine turned out a little too crumbly, so I had to add a bit more water.




 Roll to 1/4" thick. Cut into biscuits. We started using small circle cookie cutters, then I remembered I had a small cat cookie cutter from Halloween. I thought it would be cute. If you don't have cookie cutters, you can cut strips one way, then the other to make little squares (I'm sure the dog won't mind).  The kids kept eating the dough at this point, but at least I knew what was in there. Place the biscuits on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes.


And finally, biscuits only a dog (and a couple of kids) could love.

 I'm storing them in plastic.. aargh. At least it's reusable plastic, right? Making dog biscuits makes me think, I can probably make crackers in much the same way. I'll have to find a recipe.

  2. I'm just doing what I do. I thought I could write it all in a blog to collect all of the interests in my head and share them with anyone who may be interested. There's a lot in there, I'll keep writing.
